Lyric Singers of the "Accademia del Teatro alla Scala"

The Music Department offers a variety of prestigious possibilities, such as the Academy of Lyric Opera. The Academy was founded thanks to the initiative of Riccardo Muti in 1997, with the aim to embody the heritage of the glorious "Cadetti della Scala", founded by Arturo Toscanini in the 1950s. This educational and professional experience, which is spread over a two-year period,  through the years has been enriched thanks to the contributions of numerous instructors of international fame, such as Leyla Gencer (Artistic Director who passed away in 2008), Luis Alva, Renato Bruson, Mirella Freni, and Luciana Serra. In addition a number of masterclasses have been held, with instructors like Teresa Berganza, Christa Ludwig, Leo Nucci, Renata Scotto, and Shirley Verrett.

The demanding and articulate daily study is constantly interwoven with student participation in Scala performances, during which the Academy collaborates with the artistic direction of the Scala and students perform together with great interpreters in debuts playing important roles. Concerts also make up an important part of student activity, both in Italy and abroad, and the realization of opera projects includes such events as the "Academy Project" and original productions for diverse occasions. Some of the operas which have been staged include Barbiere di Siviglia, Ascanio in Alba, Così fan tutte, Nozze di Figaro and Le convenienze ed inconvenienze teatrali.

Many former students of the Academy of Lyric Opera today are already affirmed professionals, while others are just beginning to enter the realm of major new opera talents. Anita Rachvelishvili, who received her diploma in 2009, was chosen to perform Carmen in Bizet’s opera of the same name, which opened the Teatro alla Scala 2009-2010 opera season. The event was conducted by Daniel Barenboim and directed by Emma Dante.

Many former students are now admired in the major opera houses and theatres in Italy and abroad: the sopranos Serena Farnocchia, Carmen Giannattasio, Irina Lungu, Nino Machaidze, Teresa Romano; the mezzosoprano Nino Surguladze, the contralto Sonia Prina, the tenors Giuseppe Filianoti and Thiago Arancam, the baritones Simon Bailey, Fabio Capitanucci, Massimo Cavalletti, Christian Senn, Vincenzo Taormina, the bass Carlo Malinverno.
