Luis Bacalov
Pianist (he mastered scores from Bach, Chopin, Beethoven, Berio and others), composer (Misa Tango was the overture piece at the Festival di Pasqua of the Accademia Nazionale Santa Cecilia in 1999, Il Postino, won him the Oscar Prize in Los Angeles in the soundtrack category), orchestra director (he is permanent director of the Orchestra of the Magna Grecia). Luis Bacalov was born in Buenos Aires, where he began his music training with Enrique Baremboim at the age of five, continuing his studies with Berta Sujovolsky (Artur Schnabel's student). Very soon he began his music performances in Argentina as a soloist, and in a duo with the violinist Alberto Lisy as well as with chamber music ensembles. He underwent a research work on popular music of Latin American countries, working for the Colombian Radio and Television, for which he also performed North American and Latin American piano compositions from the 19th and 20th centuries.
Since 1960 he has been an active composer for the cinema both in Italy and France, working with several directors such as Lattuada, Damiani, Scola, Petri, Faccini, Giraldi, Wertmüller, Kurys, Stora, Lefebvre, Borowczyk, Greco, the Frazzi brothers, Pasolini, Fellini, Radford and Rosi. He composed the soundtrack for Il cielo cade directed by the Frazzi brothers as well as the soundtrack for Almost American. He has been awarded with many prizes among which the Davide di Donatello, the Globo d'Oro of the Foreign Press in Italy, the Nastro d'Argento of the Association of the Film Critics, the Oscar Prize of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Science, the Bafta Prize (British Academy for Film and Television Arts) and the Prize Nino Rota. He had several nominations for the movie soundtrack of Il Postino, directed by Michael Radford. In addition, he obtained a nomination to the Davide di Donatello for the movie La Tregua, directed by Francesco Rosi, and another one by the A.M.P.A for the Vangelo secondo Matteo directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini. He won the Globo d'Oro for the movie soundtrack of Il Consiglio d'Egitto directed by Emidio Greco.
Luis Bacalov is also an active conductor and pianist. Along with the traditional and contemporary repertoire, he performs music by Latin-American composers, including his own music. He has inaugurated the Cavea of the Auditorium, Parco della Musica in Rome on 2nd July 2003 with the program "Cinema Italiano" and conducted the Orchestra of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. He played the piano in the world premiere of his composition Triple Concierto, for soprano, bandoneon and piano, performed by the Santa Barbara Symphony Orchestra in California and then by the Orchestra Sinfonica Giuseppe Verdi in Milan and recently to the Rotterdam Philharmonic.
He composed music for guitar, violin, instrumental ensembles, piano and orchestra. His composition Misa Tango for soloists, chorus and orchestra was recorded by D.G.G recordings under the conducting of Myung-Whun Chung, with Placido Domingo, Ana María Martínez and Hector Ulíses Passarella. This composition was performed in Rome with the Orchestra of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia during the 1999 Easter Festival. For the D.G.G recordings Luis Bacalov has recorded his transcription for piano and orchestra of Piazzolla's tangos as well as his own Tangosaín. The entire D.G.G.\Universal album received the nomination for the Latin American Grammy Awards 2001.
He conducted Misa Tango on several occasions: last year in Palermo at the Teatro Massimo and in Bari during the Congresso Eucaristico Nazionale, this concert was broadcasted by the Italian Television. He conducted the world premiere of his first theatrical opera Estaba la Madre, commissioned by the Teatro dell'Opera of Rome and performed at the Teatro Nazionale di Roma, directed by Giorgio Barberio Corsetti in 2004 and in 2005. Estaba La Madre was first performed in Argentina at the Teatro de La Plata (Buenos Aires) in November 2007 under the conduction of the composer. In Ciudad del México, he conducted the world premiere of his opera Un ingenioso hidalgo en America. In July 2008 he conducted at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena the world premiere of his opera-ballet y Borges cuenta que… directed by Giorgio Barberio Corsetti, a tribute to one of his most well-known compatriots, an opera-ballet later performed at the Teatro Verdi in December 2009, Pisa.
The Fondazione Arena di Verona has recently paid him a tribute with a gala concert, at the Teatro Filarmonico, world premieres scores for piano, bandoneon and orchestra were performed. He has received several awards for his composer activity among which the Premio Nino Rota and in 2008 the President of the Italian Republic, Giorgio Napolitano awarded him with the Premio Vittorio de Sica, Culture Department, as outstanding artist in music. He is teaching music composition for cinema at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena.
He created a quartet with bandoneon, double-bass, percussions and piano, focusing on compositions that aim to establish relationships among several different musical cultures, thus achieving a strong syncretism in the combination among elements of ethnic, urban and contemporary music.
